There have been several times, when i was the first one on the scene of an accident, even if that accident was nothing more than a kid falling off their bicycle. By having a good first-aid kit in my trunk, i’m able to at least start taking care of them, before the ambulance gets there. Of course, if you’re going to carry that trauma kit, you need to know what to do with it.

Deals of the Day:

The point of this article is that in most survival situations, people are going to want things they can use. If you want to store up items you can trade, they need to be useful and have a great space-to-value ratio. For example, people might want shovels, but they might also want lighters, and a pack of lighters takes up a lot less space than a shovel. Lighters are also very portable, a necessity when visiting your neighbors and making deals. Here’s a list of fairly small items that could be great for bartering during a disaster : in a post-collapse world, the definition of wealth won’t be having lots of money, but having lots of resources.

Urban Disaster Survival vs Wilderness Survival

The year 2020 has rendered in-person education unachievable in many situations. Going off to take a survival course in europe is nearly impossible. This doesn’t lessen the need for this type of course. In fact, learning about shtf survival is more important than ever. The dangers are more imminent than ever. leaves So, selco has opted to bring the course to us. In this book, you can learn the survival skills that kept selco alive during the wars in the balkans in a city under siege. Selco fought to survive in his urban setting against marauding gangs, he evaded sniper fire from the mountains above the city, and he scrambled for the limited resources available.

When i say that surviving in the city has its share of unique challenges, i do not mean that the requirements of survival change. No, far from it. You’ll still need clean air, shelter, water, food and security. Coming by some of those things in an urban environment is where things get interesting compared to more classical “wilderness” survival settings. The multiplier for your problems is simple: people! i do not mean to sound the misanthrope, but more people mean more problems in a zero-sum survival situation. The finite, limited, local amount of resources-food, water, medical supplies, – will all be hungrily devoured by the teeming masses of people in need.

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes when i was 5, i used to spend entire summers with my self-sufficient grandparents, far away from noisy, crowded cities. Even though i didn’t know it back then, i was doing a lot of things that made me a prepper even before the word was actually invented… things that taught me from a young age that life isn’t all sitting on your ass and watching t. While the use of force skills and tools are completely necessary, appropriate time must be spent learning to save a life. During a shtf event, there will likely be little to no emergency medical response. You may be the only “emt” available. How Many Guns Should a Prepper Have?

Onpoint may 30, 2015 when i started preparing several years ago, i was focused on the obvious…have guns, ammo, food, water, shelter and the training to make the most of it. I was this way for at least a year and a half before i started focusing on communications as a preparedness category. As i started to demystify the realm of off grid communications, i could not believe why i had not gotten into this field sooner as it was so critically important. Unfortunately, many preppers have followed this same path; that is, they think ham radio and other comms equipment is too techy and expensive to pursue.

Keeping your body healthy throughout any situation is extremely important. If you get sick or injured, and there is no modern facility nearby, then you may be completely on your own. In order to make it out of that situation, you will need to be able to take care of yourself. Here are a few basics which can help: soap – small hotel-sized bars are better for carrying. Pain medication – any pain medication, such as ibuprofen, will do. Dry pills are better than liquid capsules, as liquid capsules can melt together in extreme heat. By: tim huber published: oct 30, 2023 by: tim huber published: oct 30, 2023 one of the main factors that have allowed humans to thrive over the last several thousand years is our use of tools. While we may still be vulnerable to nature in many off-grid situations, having the right gear on hand can literally mean the difference between life and death. Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most crucial pieces of kit to possess when outdoors is a survival knife, as these blades allow for the facilitation of many of our basic survival needs , from fire prep and starting to build shelters to basic first aid and self-defense to hunting, preparing, and cooking fish and game.

A family size kit and an individual kit for each person in your household is recommended. Medical supplies should be easy to access even if your group is in different locations throughout the day. I have found that most kits lack blood stop powder and major battle dressings. Blood stop powder comes in small tubes and larger packets. You can also get smaller bandages for less serious wounds that have blood stop powder on them already. Make sure to have extra tubes of antibiotic ointment on hand. For a small individual kit for 1-2 people, i recommend the first aid only 299 piece kit to start out.

The expression shit hits the fan dates to at least 1930. Shit hitting the fan refers to the ultimate consequences of something turning out, well, shitty. When problems (shit) start piling up (hits the fan)—that’s when things get real. Fun fact: one explanation suggests that the original fan in the expression was an agricultural mucker , which is basically a giant machine that sprays stuff everywhere. What an image. We can find the expression shit hits the fan (or one of its variants, such as the solids hit the air conditioning) in general american english slang. The acronym of the expression, shtf, is, however, associated with one particular subgroup: preppers.

There are arguments for shotguns, pistols, and even semi-automatic rifles as your home defensive weapon and it really comes down to what you have, what the threat is, and where you are in your home at the time in relation to the weapon. I have all of the items above but my home defense plan is different if i am in bed as opposed to out in the kitchen. It also depends on whether we are in a normal situation like now or in the middle of widespread riots and looting. If i am in bed and someone breaks in, i won’t grab the shotgun or the rifle, i would go for the pistol.

While it seems obvious to stockpile first aid supplies for emergencies, not many people have an emergency dental kit (aka “a survival dental kit”). Even many of the “hardcore” preppers i know still don’t have emergency dental supplies beyond some pain reliever and extra tubes of toothpaste. I’ll be honest: i only recently built my emergency dental kit. I’d been delaying it under the thought process that i was clueless about dentistry and wouldn’t know what to do anyway. It turns out that survival dentistry isn’t as complicated as you might think – so long as you are prepared.

While there may be hundreds of possible things you can include in an shtf kit, the newbie to disaster preparations may be overwhelmed by the flood of advice given from preppers and survivalists from all over. The reality is that there is no one way to prepare for oa disaster. However, this book focuses only on the basics of survivalist training to get you started setting up your shtf gear. From there you can build on what you’ve learned here and grow into a true prepper. In this book you’ll learn the different types of plans you’ll need to make in order to secure the safety of your household.

It’s important to know what goes into a quality survival pack for two reasons: first, you’ll understand how to identify high-quality gear from poor “stuff. ”and second, this pack list ensures you don’t overlook anything critical. And even if you buy one instead of building one, you’ll come across extra items you may want to add to the one you’ve bought. There are no rules against customization – in fact, it’s highly encouraged. But here’s the problem – many of you survivalists already have their bug out bag packed and ready. And when we cover in detail what’s inside a kit, you might notice some crossover between the two.

Miscellaneous Survival Kit Supplies

Pre-made survival kits are a subject that breeds controversy. Some say that these kits offer a simple starting point for those who might be new to prepping, or serve as a last-resort fail-safe for those who are unable to prepare on their own (an elderly relative, for example). Others will point out that they're needlessly expensive as opposed to building your own bug-out bag, and that the supplies within won't be much good if the recipient isn't familiar with their organization and proper use. As we've said in the past, we firmly believe that the best survival kits are the ones you assemble yourself , but we can also understand that off-the-shelf bobs may have their place in some cases.

Urban Survival Kit List

The list isn’t by far exhaustive but it should give you some fantastic ideas on what to do when shtf if you’re trapped in a town or a city. Note: i’ve done my best to only include tips that are relevant to urban scenarios that are not always mentioned in general/rural survival articles. features

When planning a bug-out operation in an urban environment, there are a few items you may want to add to your standard bug-out bag checklist to give you more options: gas masks , dust masks , tactical leather gloves , and eye protection because the city is a nasty and dangerous place. Roadmaps and topographical maps for the applicable city for route planning and navigation. Binoculars for early threat detection and to limit unnecessary movement. Sillcock key for accessing external taps (if the water is still on). Escape kit for defeating locks without destruction (if you have the skills). Check out the bogota kit from serepick.

Those all-in-one knives they sell at the big-box store may seem like a good idea, with their partially serrated blades and survival kits tucked inside the handle. But wait — if you can store something inside the grip, that means the entire back half of the knife is hollow. How long do you think it would hold up if you needed to clear brush or pry open a can of beans? no, what you should be looking for is a single piece of high-quality steel, stretching from the tip of the blade to the base of the pommel. We cover a few of the well-known metals below , but you must be able to identify the type of steel used in your knife.

It’s All Up to You

Can you pull up your body weight with your arms? whether you’re climbing out a window to escape a burning house, climbing up a tree to navigate, climbing to a roof to escape rising flood waters or just getting over a wall to get away from an attacking dog, having the strength and dexterity to climb is a useful survival skill. situation

But don’t worry! you won’t pay a single penny more! as my plans include bugging out in case of shtf to my bol (bug out location), most of the time and effort is spent on preparing that part, but being prepper in apartment is an interesting topic too. Some of us do not have other options, so they are planning to be where they are when shtf-in apartment, and survive. Other good reason to talk about apartment prepping is simply because all of our plans may vanish (plans to bug out to our bol) so we could be simply forced to stay where we are when the system collapses.

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes besides our intelligence and having opposing thumbs, what sets us humans apart from the animal kingdom is that we can use tools. I’m not just talking about a hammer and screwdriver here; pretty much everything we use to perform everyday tasks can be considered a tool, from the refrigerator we open to get milk, to the car we drive to get to work. There’s just one problem with all these tools… they can break. Some tools seem like they’re designed to break so that you have to buy another, while others look like they’re built to last forever, but break anyway.

Lakes, Rivers, Ponds, and Fountains

A standard scenario following many disasters is a local loss of electric power. The result is that well pumps don’t operate and even the large, industrial pumps used to refill municipal water towers can’t refill the water tanks. A more devastating result is when natural water sources like ponds, lakes, and rivers become saturated with wastewater, debris, chemicals, and petroleum products from swamped cars. There’s even the possibility of heavy metal contamination from industrial debris in local waterways. The end result falls in the category of water everywhere and not a drop to drink. In those instances, the most complex filtration and purification can be challenging and it’s all complicated by scores of desperate and thirsty people competing for limited resources.

There is one last thing that i wanted to mention about urban preparedness. If you have inside knowledge or you are just paying attention to the warning signs all around us, the best thing that you can do before shtf is to leave the city. Whether to stay or go is a highly personal and difficult choice to make. However, when the shtf is in a large city things can deteriorate quickly, leaving you boxed in with dwindling resources and unpredictable situations. Thanks for reading and stay prepared. Robert richardson survival gear , survival knives 7 when it comes to selecting survival gear, one of the most important pieces of gear in your preparedness arsenal is going to be your knife. A good survival knife is worth its weight in gold and finding the right one shouldn’t be a decision that’s taken lightly. Unfortunately, the internet has made it even harder on preppers and preparedness minded people to find the right information. In fact, a majority of the reviews or web pages you will find promoting the so-called best survival knives are nothing more than cleverly crafted sales pages written by people who have zero experience with survival, and even less experience with the knives they are talking about.

Don’t forget about tooth pain! i’ve talked to many war and disaster survivors, and one thing they mention is that dental hygiene usually goes to hell in shtf situations. Tooth pain is hellish. Compiling a stash of emergency-preparedness items used to be a task many of us kept on the back burner — something we knew was important and we’d get to eventually. But eventually, we now know, might be closer than anyone thought. And while we’re not suggesting you start digging out an underground bunker and filling it with instant noodles , in the past few years we’ve come to learn that having a few things on hand before you need them will only help you, even if it’s just mentally. Most preppers, like oregon’s afrovivalist , sharon ross, equate preparation with peace of mind.

2. Countertop Water Filter System

A portable water filter can come in handy if you get stuck off-grid. It can be important if you do not have access to a water system or your tank is empty. Filter should be easy to carry and light enough to be able to lift and put away easily. Make sure your has a portable water filter in your shtf gear list. It’ll allow you to drink clean water from streams and rivers that you might not otherwise be able to access. They’re lightweight and extremely compact. They also don’t need to be treated with chemicals or attached to a faucet, and they can be used in most cases if water is available.

After making more passes through the different preparedness needs, you reevaluate your threat assessment and decide to bump water back up the priority list and commit some time and money. You don’t only want to drink water, you want the ability to clean clothes, dishes, and your body – as well as water the garden. A little studying shows you how to install rain barrels under each gutter. You ensure the system will guard against mosquitoes laying eggs in the stagnant water and build the means to both use the water for irrigating your garden and filter it for personal use.

17. 30 Day Food Supply Bucket

These are food items that are not going to store for an extended period without going rancid. They’re likely the foods you eat every day, and this is where your food storage efforts should start. If you don’t have one already, build a basic home pantry area. If you don’t have the space for it, find ways to be creative with space. Short of some refrigerated goods, simply buying a few more of the same items you already buy can build your short-term food storage over time. You should be able to build a one-month supply of food just by adding more of what you already eat each time you go to the grocery store.
